Transition (for young people)
Welcome to #TeamTeilo!
We are so excited to welcome you to St Teilo's. This page tells you all about the arrangements to get you settled into your new school.
Transition broadcast
The Headteacher, Mr Loynd, will introduce you St Teilo's in a broadcast at 6pm on Monday 24 June 2024. During the broadcast, the Headteacher will tell you all about the school and its mission. You can submit any questions you may have and Mr Loynd will answer them live! You can access the broadcast here on your phone, tablet or computer.
Transition days
We would like to invite you to visit us on Wednesday 26 June 2024 and Thursday 27 June 2024 from 8.40am until 3.00pm.
During your visit, the Headteacher will speak to you in an assembly and introduce you to some important staff. You will then enjoy some lessons and begin to find your way around the school. There will plenty of time to ask questions and you'll have a great experience!
If other people from your primary school are coming to St Teilo's, they'll be there with you on these days. If you do not know anybody, don't worry - this is a great chance to make some new friends!
Remember to bring a packed lunch and some drinking water with you.
Induction day
We'll be opening the school on Wednesday 4 September 2024 especially for our new Year 7 students. So, on this day, you will have the whole school to yourself! We'll introduce you to your teachers, give you your timetable and answer all the questions you have.
You need to arrive at school by 8.30am ready to begin at 8.40am.
A welcome from the Headteacher, Mr Loynd
Hello! My name is Mr Loynd and I am the Headteacher at St Teilo's Church in Wales High School.
Our school is a happy and loving place and I am very proud of all the children who attend here. We call ourselves #TeamTeilo because we serve and take care of one another.
When you join #TeamTeilo in September, you are joining a large family who will nurture and support you.
This page will introduce you to life at St Teilo's but if you have any questions you can always get in touch with me here.
A welcome from your Head of Year, Mr Evans
Hi Year 6! Welcome to the start of your #TeamTeilo journey. My name is Mr Evans and I will be your Achievement Leader in your first year of secondary school. It is my job to support, care for and guide you in all aspects of school life. I will be there for you and your family every step of the way.
I know that for some of you transition to high school can be scary. Please - do not worry! Before I worked in St Teilo's I was a teacher in Year 6 in a primary school. So I know exactly how to look after you!
You are now part of a very special family - the #TeamTeilo family - and I am here to answer all your questions and queries.
I will see you on our transition days. Be sure to say hello and tell me all about you.
A welcome from #TeamTeilo students
Hi everybody! We are in Year 7 at St Teilo's and we want to let you know that you have nothing to worry about when you come to high school. Here are some of our reflections:
"I was worried about getting lost but the school isn't as big as it looks at first! There were always people to show me where to go."
"I was worried that the teachers would be scary and shout a lot but they were friendly and helpful - just like my teachers from primary school!"
"I was worried about getting to lessons on time but there were lots of other pupils willing to help. They were really friendly and pointed us in the right direction. The teachers understand that it takes a while to find your way around!"
"I was worried about bullying. In my first week at St Teilo's my Form Tutor talked to me about who we could speak to if we saw any bullying in the school. I felt safe knowing I had lots of people supporting me."
"I was worried about new lessons that I hadn't done before. Now I love them! There are lots of new and exciting opportunities in secondary school."
"I was worried about having too much work to do and not being able to understand everything. I didn't need to worry; the work was linked to what I already knew from primary school and my teachers expected quality over quantity!"
"I was worried about not making any friends but now I have loads of new mates. I am still friends with a few people from primary school as well. You spend a lot of time together in lessons so there are plenty of chances to get to know people. I love being in a Form Group because I like having other people to look out for me."
"I was worried I wouldn't fit in. When I came to St Teilo's I quickly realised that everyone is individual and different but they are still all one team! The school has lots of themed weeks that celebrate our diversity and help us to be truly ourselves!"
Your Form Group
When you join St Teilo's, you will be added to a Form Group.
Form Groups are special collections of individuals who look after each other. They are led by a Form Tutor who acts like a school parent! They will take care of you and will get to know you very well over the years.
Form Groups provide fellowship (or 'togetherness') and a deep sense of belonging - just like friends and family outside of school.
Form Groups:
- Look after one another
- Teach one another
- Celebrate one another
- Worship with one another
- Inspire one another
Your Form Group will be an important part of your #TeamTeilo journey.
Frequently Asked Questions
Some pupils in year 7 have answered the questions that they wanted to ask when they were in Year 6!
The 'mission' is everything St Teilo's aims to be. We say that our school is a community of learning and formation that:
- Improves excellence
- Increases equity
- Deepens faith
So that we can be fully the people God is calling us to be.
You will hear us talking about 'Excellence, Equity and Faith' a lot!
All of our teaching groups in Year 7 begin with a complete mix of personalities, interests and abilities. We try to match people with those they get along with or learn well with but remember that moving to secondary is a chance to make new friends! We do not promise that you will be in a class with all your friends from primary school because by achieving a good balance we can help everyone to become brilliant learners. Do not worry if you are coming from primary school alone - you'll soon meet new people!
Yes! There are many, many sports teams that train and play during and after school each day. If you put a lot of effort in, there are also competitions you are able to enter. There are clubs running every break time too!
St Teilo's has a very strict rule on mobile phones: they are not allowed to be seen anywhere inside the building! We don't think you need a phone in school at all but, if you do bring one, make sure it is switched off and kept safely in your bag.
We use a 'biometric' system at St Teilo's. This means that you will never need cash because your parent or carer can charge your account online. To pay for food, you simply hold your thumb or finger over a scanner. Simple! It may take a few days in September to get things up and running... but when they are, we promise you will love the meals available!
It is true that St Teilo's is a big school of 1500 pupils. But it is surprisingly easy to find your way around! We have one very long and wide corridor which we call the 'street'. Everyone gets lost to begins with (even the new teachers)! So please do not worry about that. There are always adults in the corridor to show you where to go. In a few days, you'll be an expert!
We hope that you find people at St Teilo's are kind and caring. On the rare occasion that somebody might say or do something that upsets you, please tell an adult. Our very large wellbeing team can quickly help you to sort the problem out.
We have three very simple rules at St Teilo's: Respect People; Respect Learning; and Respect Property. If you fall short and do something wrong, we won't scare you or shout at you. St Teilo's is a 'restorative' school. This means that we work with young people to put things right through dialogue and discussion. We believe in you and we know that all children want to achieve and belong.
Starting high school is the best opportunity to make new friends. To do this, you need to have an open mind and an open heart. If you see somebody on their own, make sure you go and chat with them! This is the #TeamTeilo way.
We only set homework that is meaningful and worthwhile. You won't be overwhelmed, don't worry! We provide extra work for those pupils who want to study a little harder at home as well.
St Teilo's has a unique approach to uniform. We offer a 'brand' and you can where whatever you'd like from within that brand! You have lots of choice and all of your uniform is bought directly from the school.
Our character practices
At St Teilo's, it is important that we develop our character (and not just focus on good grades). We like to think of this as learning the ‘language of heaven’ so that we can understand more about God's purposes for us and our place in God’s creation. Why not reflect on what these values mean and research the role models who inspire us?
