Sixth Form Study Day

The school affords Years 12 and 13 one day each year to study from home with the purpose of completing work for the Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales. This year, the study day takes place on Friday 21 February 2025.

Year 12

Year 12 should complete the 'Becoming Self Aware' Task (1a) from the 'Future Destinations' project. This should be uploaded to Google Classroom by 3pm on Friday. If complete, students may commence the preparatory research work for the 'Becoming Employment Aware' Task (1b).

Advice and guidance

"Self-awareness is the key to growth, health, and happiness, and helps you to become aware of how to promote yourself to others whether applying for university, an apprenticeship or employment and in making the right choices for your future. Produce a Self-Assessment in preparation for your future destination. You may already have an idea about your future pathway choice and undertaking a self-assessment will help you to consider all options available to you." (WJEC)

Students have begun the assessment in lessons. It is important for their work to reflect their own personality (it is a really nice idea to include some personal photographs). Students must remember not just to focus on skills and experiences gained in school. The skill of digital literacy is also being assessed, so presentation is important. There is a checklist on Google Classroom that explains what to include in detail.

Year 13

Year 13 should now be working on the main body section of their Individual Project. This is the most lengthy of the sections from the Individual Project.

The assessment is very similar to a dissertation, traditionally completed in the final year of any degree course, so offers students an excellent opportunity to develop their research skills. Students have opted to complete either a traditional written project or to develop an artefact.

Written project

"Produce a written research project (approximately 5,000 words) that would be enhanced by the inclusion of a variety of statistical diagrams, tables, and images." (WJEC)

Artefact

"You need to carry out research to inform the design and development of your intended artefact. Your project will be made up of two parts: Part 1 - research report (approximately 1,500 words) that outlines the strategy and research you will carry out; Part 2 - development record that outlines how the design of the artefact is closely determined from your research through the various stages of development to the final outcome." (WJEC)

Mrs Owen has created a narrated presentation and a video to assist with the completion of the main body. There are also other documents on Google Classroom you may wish to refer to, especially the Student Guide. Students should take this opportunity of an extended block of time to really focus and get stuck in! The main body is to be completed by the 14 March 2025 and the WJEC suggest spending 45 hours working on this section.

We hope that this time and space is helpful to make some excellent progress through these extended pieces of work. Should you have any queries, please reach out to Mrs Owen.
